We need you to Walk for WESC Foundation
16 July 2020
On Tuesday 21st July we’re asking our staff, young people and supporters to Walk for WESC Foundation.
We’re inviting you to join our staff, supporters and volunteers in a day of walking. The event is to raise awareness of what we do to empower young people with visual impairment and complex needs to live their best lives. We also want to raise some money for our Home from Home development appeal.
The story behind Walk for WESC Foundation
The event is inspired by the story of our Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge team who missed out on this year’s event on Dartmoor due to COVID-19. The event usually brings together teenagers and young adults aged 14-21 who camp and then complete challenging walks across the moorland with distances and routes suited to their own individual challenges.
We’ve decided to recreate the challenge on campus, complete with tents and campsite food. The rugged terrain of Dartmoor has been replaced by a 1 mile route around and through the WESC Foundation campus. It takes in different terrain and settings that might be less familiar to our young people. Each of the walkers is being challenged to complete the equivalent distance of the Jubilee Challenge routes up to 17 miles.
The Home from Home appeal
COVID-19 has meant that many of us have been unable to leave our homes. The children and young people at WESC Foundation, a specialist provision for children and young adults with visual impairment and complex needs, are no different.
Today, they need your help to transform their old, outdated facilities into modern living accommodation with specially adapted equipment where they can learn key life skills and live as independently as possible. Together, we can create their fit for purpose home-from-home.
With our fundraising activities impacted by COVID-19 we need your help more than ever.
How can I help?
Firstly it’s important to say that you don’t have to make a donation or walk a minimum distance to support the Walk for WESC Foundation. All we ask is that you tell us how much distance you covered (so we can add it to the grand total) and either make a donation or simply tell the world what you’ve done and why.
Here are some ideas of how you can get involved:
- Walk to work and donate your bus fare to our Home from Home appeal.
- Take the dog for their usual walk, snap a selfie, and share it on social media. Don’t forget to tag us or use the hashtag #WalkForWescFoundation
- Give up part of your lunch break to walk for WESC Foundation and email the Fundraising team with your mileage
- Take on a challenge (e.g. 5k a day for the whole week, a marathon between all the members of your family) and ask for sponsorship. You can raise money via JustGiving
