Hansel and Gretel at the Pheonix
In September the Exeter based PaddleBoat Theatre Company came into WESC Foundation’s horticulture area to support a drama workshop with WESC students working in collaboration with students from other ‘Topsham Road’ schools; Southbrook School, Wynstream Primary, ISCA Academy and ERADE – Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education. The Horticulture area came alive with creative environmental tales as the company believe that theatre is a space where imagination is brought to life.
Throughout the Autumn term the PaddleBoat Theatre have led further workshops with these schools to create a performance which took place at the Phoenix Theatre in Exeter on Monday 26th November. Each of the schools performed together; an inclusive production inspired by the folktale of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. The aim of the project, which was funded by The Ragdoll Foundation, Devon County Council and Arts Council England, was to bring a diverse group of students from schools in the same geographical area together, to learn new skills, explore different methods of communication, challenging the perception of themselves and others to create a performance inclusive to a wide range of audience needs.
Students from WESC Foundation had a fantastic time taking part in the workshops, creating their own poem, song and Christmas market stall through multi-sensory experiences. Thank you to the PaddleBoat Theatre Company for giving WESC students this opportunity. Students, staff and family members really enjoyed watching the final performance. Well done everyone.
