Exeter charity takes next step as Disability Confident Leader
7 July 2021
Local charity WESC Foundation is celebrating after being recognised as one of only four Disability Confident Leaders in the county.
The latest accolade reflects the fact that staff at the charity are encouraging and supporting other businesses to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people.
WESC Foundation had previously been certified as a Disability Confident Employer, reflecting the inclusive way that staff from the widest possible pool of talent are recruited into the organisation.
The Disability Confident scheme was initially created to provide employers with the skills and confidence they need to attract, recruit, retain and develop disabled people in the workplace.
Commenting on the news, Maureen Biss (Director of HR and Enterprise) said:
“There are still too many barriers in place for people with disabilities to access employment.
“We’re proud to be taking a lead through the Disability Confident programme to make sure that employers always focus on everyone’s abilities and qualities, rather than just focus on a disability.”
