A year of great achievement at WESC Foundation

27 July 2021

At the end of the academic year, WESC Foundation hold an annual achievement awards ceremony to celebrate the amazing things our young people have achieved throughout the year.

This year, the achievement awards acknowledged and congratulated the resilience, courage and compassion of all our young people in the strangest of pandemic years. In extraordinary circumstances, our young people have learnt to be flexible and adaptable, patient and tolerant. They have adapted to new class bubbles, learning from home, learning over zoom, being away from friends and being away from family.

Our young people achieve brilliant things every day

The achievement awards are an integrated event across all of the services WESC Foundation offers to young people – school, college, adult day services, St Davids residential services and our supported living services. This year the event took place in a marquee on our sports track, where our young people, staff, trustees and some parents came together for the first time in over a year.

Our young people achieve brilliant things every day. They learn new living skills, master a new mobility route, catch a bus independently, improve their braille, forge special friendships, share opinions in student council meetings, achieve personal bests in swimming and prepare for the world of work. The awards are in categories in an attempt to recognise all of these achievements and more. These included; The Mrs O Trophy for Independent Life Skills, The WESC Foundation Vision Award, The Claire Philips Music Award, The WESC Foundation Award for Outstanding Creative Endeavour and The WESC Foundation Citizenship and Supporting Others Award to name a few.

This years overall winners

It’s no easy task to pick the overall winners. We awarded all of our students an achievement medal to recognise so many fantastic and varied achievements. Each category also recognised those that were highly commended for the award and they were presented with a star badge to wear proudly. The overall winners were presented WESC Foundation’s historic shields and trophies along with a smaller trophy that they could keep as a reminder of their success.

To the right are some of this years winners. Ioan achieved the WESC Foundation student of the year award, as the student who has made the most progress during the year. Ethan and Will were joint winners of The Chief Executive Officers’ Award for Outstanding All Round Achievement. Individually and collectively these students have been huge contributors to the WESC Foundation community. This picture perfectly captures their wonderful friendship and wicked sense of humour!

It’s a wonderful sight to see all of our young people celebrating the success of their friends and peers with lots of applause and huge smiles. This years awards was our first face-to-face event in over a year and it made us all so proud to celebrate all of our young peoples fantastic achievements.
