How to create a Facebook Fundraiser for WESC Foundation

1 January 2021

A Facebook Fundraiser is an easy way for people to raise money for a wide range of good causes. In this blog Laurence Blyth (Head of External Affairs) takes you through some tips for setting one up.

How are people using Facebook Fundraisers?

Users of the social network have started fundraisers for all sorts of things. Some are asking friends and families to donate a few pounds to a charity instead of sending them a birthday card or present.

For others there’s a particular cause or organisation with a cause that really resonates with them, often through their own experience or that of a family member, friend or colleague. Because you have that personal connection with the charity, you are more likely to encourage donations from your friends.

The good news is that Facebook Fundraisers are easy to setup, and all the donations go directly to the charity (Facebook doesn’t charge any fees).

Let’s get started

We’re going to setup our Facebook Fundraiser for WESC Foundation. First you need to head over to WESC Foundation’s Facebook Fundraiser page. If you’re not already signed into Facebook then you will need to enter login details.

A box will pop-up to start creating your fundraiser. If you’ve used the link on this post then you’re setup to raise money for WESC Foundation. Whilst I would love you to support our work, I should also point out that you are able to choose from a long list of other good causes too.

Next you choose how much money you want to raise. All the money you collect really helps, so don’t feel you have to aim high. Your chosen charity receives all everything so don’t worry if you don’t quite reach your goal.

Choose an end date for your Facebook fundraiser, and think about motivating your friends along the way with key milestones. Examples might include:

  • In the first week you’ve already donated £xxxx
  • There’s 1 week to go and I’ve nearly reached my target

Next, pick a title and tell the world why want to raise the money. This bit is over to you! It might be that you or someone you know has benefitted from our services. Maybe you’ve seen some of our work and you’ve been inspired to help out. Whatever your reasons, this is the chance to tell your story.

Finally you can add a photograph. If you’re hosting a birthday fundraiser then maybe a picture of when you were a lot younger? We can always help out with some nice images from the WESC Foundation collection if you need a little inspiration.

Where will the money go?

Monies raised through Facebook Fundraising help to support a wide range of projects which might include:

  • Communications aids (essential for young people who have difficulty in speaking and rely on augmentative and alternative communication)
  • Sensory equipment like squishy bouncy balls and weighted blankets
  • Clothing and outdoor equipment to help our students to take part in the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge
  • Buoyancy aids to assist with hydrotherapy
  • Arranging access to therapeutic and/or sensory experiences including Riding for the Disabled.
  • Specially-adapted cars to transport young people to medical appointments, work experience placements or other activities.

Above all rely on the generosity of others to ensure the children and young people have a memorable time at the WESC Foundation. With the help and support from our staff and our wonderful supporters, the children and young people leave us with a solid foundation needed for a brighter future.
